Break My Fall is incredible.I would normally shy away from books with any religious undertones, but that's not what this book is about. Cults are fascinating to me, and the development of the cult and the way these characters flourish through is beyond intriguing. I finished reading this book several days ago, and I haven't stopped thinking about Abe and Myra's story.
I'm a big fan of M Mabie, but this book is unlike anything she's written prior to this. I am finding a stronger desire lately to read romance novels that break the mold, and this one shattered it. Not only is Break My Fall unique for Mabie, but it's a unique story within the genre that I never expected.
Abe is a good guy. He's a hard worker, incredibly humble, and the dimensions of his character are comparable to those of Mia Sheridan's "Archer's Voice". The cult that he was raised in shaped much of his personality, while he developed well beyond the realm of what could be expected.
Myra is a real treat. She is strength wrapped in confusion, a sweet girl with a mislead heart, and her story is just starting. I found myself glued to the pages from her perspective, and it was mesmerizing to kind of get inside her head. I wanted to shake her, and hug her, and ... pray for her (who even am I anymore?)
I would HIGHLY recommend Break My Fall. I am dying for the next book because I am NOT ready for Abe and Myra's ending. It is easily the best book I've read in 2018. If you're looking for an unexpected treat, this is your book! (less)

Break My Fall The Breaking Trilogy Book 1 edition by M Mabie Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
M. Mabie has clearly upped her game with this first book in the Breaking Trilogy. Break My Fall covers a subject I am always very curious and presents it beautifully. I just loved the quiet, brooding Abraham Hathaway and his determined and hard-working way of life. And to see how he sacrifices himself in order to save Myra, his brother's widow, from the life that he left oh so long ago was as unexpected as it was intriguing. Once out from under the thumb of the Great Pastor Hathaway, those like Abe don't ever return. But oh boy, when he does to attend Jacob's funeral, all of his original intentions fly right out of the window and perhaps what he begins to find in Myra is the missing fire to his banal existence.
Yeah I really like stories about cults and the heroes who swoop in to save the day, seemingly saving themselves as well as the so-called damsel in distress. But with Myra, I truly enjoyed watching her blossom in such a small amount of time outside of her comfort zone in Lancaster, and giving Abe a run for his money. She is no shrinking violet and their awkward times together were both sweet and even a bit fiery at times. These two have a definite chemistry, with Abe not sure how to keep her safe and happy, while he hopelessly tries to figure out his new feelings towards his new bride.
I particularly liked the fact that the Author didn't get lost or bogged down with unnecessary details about the followers of The Word. Instead we get small glimpses of how they live and how their strong devotion to God and the Pastor is extremely stifling. There is enough in this first book to whet one's appetite about where the story might go and to grasp just how much Myra and Abe truly like each other despite their unusual beginning. In fact, although Abe was there to save Myra from a less than acceptable future life, with a cliffhanger of an ending we are left knowing that Abe may just be the one to be saved after all.
I cannot wait for book two and what promises to be a very intensive continuation of this most unexpected romance. This is definitely a ride worth taking and has all the subtle enticements that I crave in a book of this kind.
5 stars!
I have a secret to tell you; I am obsessed with cults like to a dangerous level. I find them fascinating and Break My Fall fed into my fixation, partly because I find cults based on biblical fallacies and call themselves Christians the most interesting. M. Mabie delivered an engrossing and complex world with Lancaster and The Banded Church of God.
I am a little in awe of how sinister M. Mabie was able to make the town, the church, and its members feel without delving much into who they were. She did a fabulous job of conveying how intrinsically evil everything that was going on in Lancaster was with short conversations, body language, and an eerie sense of perfection. Even the name she chose for the town, Lancaster, brings to mind a particular way of life I could never hope to understand, nor want to experience.
Both Abe and Myra were compelling characters. Abe had a darkness in him – a direct result of being raised by the leader of the cult – that called to me, he did a fabulous job of suppressing it, but I can feel the anger and need caused by those compulsions festering beneath the surface, and I can’t wait to see how it manifests. I’m sure he will do good with his rage, as his instincts are to help and save rather than hurt and destroy. Myra is a little more of a question mark, at this point in their story, since all her actions are still colored by the <s>brainwashing</s> teaching she received in the cult. The little glimpses we’ve seen of what her true personality are have been promising, though, and I have no doubt she’ll work with Abe to do whatever they can to prevent another generation of people to be abused by The Banded Church of God.
I loved that M. Mabie didn’t throw Abe and Myra headlong into a physical relationship. Their connection was evident from their first meeting, but they were both dealing with so many things regarding their families, the Church, and Myra forging a new life, they needed a minute to absorb everything, learn how to interact, and Myra had to have the time to begin to discover who she was when she was able to make all her own choices.
Break My Fall is the first book in M. Mabie’s Breaking trilogy. This book is not a standalone and does end with a bit of a cliffhanger. These books will all follow Myra and Abe, and the trilogy will need to be read in its entirety to experience the entire story. Break My Fall is written in dual first-person perspective, narrated by Myra and Abraham.
M. Mabie won me over with her Wake series and has yet to let me down. She writes intriguing, complex stories with fabulously sympathetic, flawed characters. I’m impressed with the originality of this story in particular and can’t wait to see what she has in store for us as the series continues.
