Hell Fire Corine Solomon Book 2 Ann Aguirre Books
So I slogged through book 1 and really disliked Corine but I had already bought the second book (4-3 promotion) so read it hoping the characters would improve. No such luck. Corine is still petty, selfish, vain and pretty much just plain unlikeable. The whole rehash of the love triangle from book 1 was just as annoying as the first time around.(SPOILER in the following paragraph)
The plot line was simply awful. I was not overly impressed with Corine's ability to snuff people so easily. Also, the scene with Shannon and her mother's death near the end was absurd. These characters are emotionless, unless of course we are talking about Corine's endless "tease" of both Jesse and Chance. Why either of these men would want anything to do with her is beyond me. And, please STOP talking about her hair, we get it, it's long and it's red, woo-hoo.
Most of the book is rehashing her past romance with Chance and the possibility of a romance with Jesse, but gee whiz do I still love Chance, but wait no, Jesse is just so hot and sweet, but no Chance is my soul mate, but no... yada, yada, yada. And, oh yeah, some bad guys are in town doing some bad stuff but let's not get bogged down in the details of that, isn't my long, red hair fabulous and, gee whiz I would like to jump Jesse's bones, oh wait no, I want to jump Chances bones... endless romantic drivel.
The characters lack substance and dimension, I just don't really like any of them and the story isn't strong enough to overcome it.

Hell Fire Corine Solomon Book 2 Ann Aguirre Books Reviews
HELL FIRE picks up just weeks after the events that occurred in Blue Diablo as Corrine and Chance are returning to her hometown of Kilmer, Georgia to get the truth about her mother's murder thirteen years earlier. With Chance's luck, Corrine is determined to finally be able to bring the killers to justice.
The paranormal world in this series is populated with ghosts, demons, witches, and 'The Gifted' (individuals with varying abilities; everything from psychics, empaths, and mediums). Most Gifted are born with their abilities, others like Corrine, acquire them through different means. And then there's Chance. He is something entirely other able to use 'luck' the way we might use a computer.
Ann Aguirre has an amazing ability to make the reader breath in the air of her location, in HELL FIRE, the little town of Kilmer, Georgia is every bit as much the main character as Corrine, maybe even more so. I felt like I was tasting Miz Ruth's dumplings, smelling the fetid air of the damp forest, enduring the searing pain of Corrine's Gift when she handled a charged object. Reading HELL FIRE is a completely sensory experience that wouldn't be half as immersive in the hands of a lesser writer.
The love triangle between Corrine, Jesse and Chance was not my favorite part of the book. I lost some respect for Corrine as she seemed to fall into whoever's arms were closest at the time without a thought for the other guy who, often as not, was in the other room. I don't understand why either of the guys put up with it. And I hated the choice Corrine ends up making.
The pacing problems I had with Blue Diablo did not plague HELL FIRE in the slightest. The story moved along swiftly with every scene contributing something significant either to the characters or plot. If you enjoyed Blue Diablo, HELL FIRE is even better. I can't even imagine what Ann has in store for us when Shady Lady (Corine Solomon, Book 3) comes out in April 2011.
Sexual Content References to sex. A scene of mild sensuality.
No plot summaries or spoilers.
This is book 2 in Ms. Aguirre's urban fantasy series that starts with Blue Diablo A Corine Solomon Novel. If you like book 1, you will like book 2. Rating of 3 stars because, though it was entertaining, it wasn't riveting and there were a couple points that detracted as I go into below.
High level Fantastic ideas in this series. This is by far one of the more creative concepts for an urban fantasy world. There are no typical vampires, fae or weres. Characters are well developed with interesting supernatural abilities.
Atmosphere is ominous, threats are mostly implied. Not too much direct violence. This book has a particularly creepy setting in a small town that seems to have been disconnected by reality and evil leeches out of the very foundations. This is not a book to read if you are looking for a bright, shiny, happy world. This also isn't the quickest read, but it isn't heavy. Ms. Aguirre's writing tends toward the descriptive side. With so much to visualize, the reading takes a bit more time. You certainly don't skim her books- you immerse yourself.
Characters are well developed. I have to admit that the main character can be a bit irritating, but only when it comes to the romance side of the story. There are two love interests- Chance and Jesse. Both are great characters, complex and sympathetic. Our heroine, however, manages to tease them both mercilessly which detracts from her appeal and integrity. Her behavior simply isn't excusable- not by her attraction to both nor by the trauma she might be undergoing. At times I wanted to pull those boys aside and tell them they deserve someone better!
The new addition of Shannon was a nice touch, though. The supporting characters in this series really are some of the most intriguing I've come across. Should make for interesting upcoming stories.
The plot was well thought out. It almost opens up ideas for future installments. It was logical and provided a tragic back story for the existing conflict. The pacing left something to be desired, however. It starts off pretty slow. It took a while for me to get into it. Somewhere around the middle it picks up and is consistent, though never very intense, through to the end.
The only other thing is that I felt there weren't enough clues to what happened in the last book. Names are mentioned that I, frankly, don't remember. (WHO was Kel again?) Perhaps Blue Diablo didn't have all that strong an impact on me- but I read it some time ago. You don't want an author to treat the reader like a child, but some amount of recap or reminder is necessary to avoid confusion. That was a little annoying.
This isn't a firecracker of a book. More a slow, chilling burn... something to read in the dark as you get close to Halloween.
FURTHER READING The following are urban fantasy series that are somewhat like this one- more about the mystery and magic than the violence and romance.
Jim Butcher's Storm Front (The Dresden Files, Book 1)
Kim Harrison's Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, Book 1)
Caitlin Kittredge's more gritty Night Life (Nocturne City, Book 1)
Devon Monk's cold & dark Magic to the Bone (Allie Beckstrom)
Diana Rowland's Mark of the Demon (Kara Gillian, Book 1)
