I really liked this story and the characters as well. I thought that Ryder was awesome. And the war, destruction and despair on top of all the rest...terrific and unique. It was so sad when her father dies. I loved this story and have been waiting for the sequel.

This book was free on , can't go wrong with that. The writing was excellent and I would have given it 5 stars however it isn't really my kind of story. Its futuristic and I am not really into that and rather things remain current to real life current times. Maddie and Ryder are best friends since childhood. She is in Nursing school with her other best friend Eva. Ryder is a manwhore who doesn't do relationships. Ryder hitches a ride with them back to the city and stays with Maddie for a few days before he is enlisting in the army. Their attraction increases during this time and they end up sleeping together after she breaks up with her boyfriend after he trys to rape her. During a night out at a club terrorists attack America and take out the power grids. They have to survive the city and get back to their hometown where Ryders family are survivalists. It takes days to return and they are attacked along the way, its every man for himself but they finally make it back with Eva and Brody. They continue to fight their attraction to each other, giving each other mixed signals for weeks before he finally realizes he can't live with out her. Maddie find herself pregnant but doesn't tell Ryder before he goes off to help Brody get Eva back who was taken by the terrorists. This is the first book of a series.
Ryder and Maddie have been friends since childhood. Ryder is the ultimate bad boy and playboy and Maddie is the sweet innocent girl. Maddie has it in her head that Ryder is off-limits. Ryder has it in his head that he wants her and has always wanted her. They have a push and pull type of relationship. Ryder wants Maddie but his need to protect her from him hurting her is greater so he reels her in then throws her away.

Maddie has always held more than friendship with Ryder but he does not feel worthy. Maddie holds her own insecurities and doubts regarding Ryder. Maddie wants more than friendship from Ryder but is afraid he can only offer friendship.

With impending danger looming Ryder and Maggie struggle to stay alive to make it home.
It's a thrilling and adventurous journey about two couples trying to make it back home to their farm while the world is under the attack by terrorist. Along the way they lose their vehicle at gun point and have to travel in the blistering heat by foot for miles. They are dirty, hurt, hungry, and thirsty.
It's a survival story. In the midst of a war where terrorists have attacked US soil Ryder and Maddie battle their own war on love.
The story is full of angst and some steamy sex scenes. Some danger is included as well as some grief. It was a great beginning but the story is not over and I'm not sure I'm ready to face the new challenge of finding out Ryder has been shot and captured by terrorists after rescuing one of their own.
I love his book because of Ryder... He is so big and menacing and angry and loving and controlling and a total screw up but he has a weakness for the love of his life. It's an amazing setup with the dangers of the apocalypse and the gritty reality of them facing the world crumbling around them and the lengths Ryder will go to to keep Maddie's safe...... If only she was worth it. I just couldn't love her. Damn I tried but she is such a falsely strong person... It was played off like she was strong but what a farse. I don't think she had confidence or much back bone. It aggregated me that she was the reason Ryder was distracted in fights or she was making things worse... She was kinda stupid and it doesn't get better with the second book fyi
The only reason I'm giving this three stars is because of what the story was about. Not the characters AT ALL! I loved the concept and there was so much promise. Sadly it fell flat with Ryder and Maddie. All Maddie did was whine and complain. Pout and stomp her feet. Oh and lets not forget to be extremely stubborn to the point that she was in danger repeatedly. Refusing to break into a house because you know that's bad. Who cares that no one was home and they may have food and water. Or at the end where she decided to keep her little secret from Ryder. Cause you know she has time and it can wait. Even though he asked her. Ugh... Then there is Ryder who is man whore. Yet is possessive of Maddie. Growls at anyone male that comes near her or touches or looks at her. But ya know he doesn't want her. Let me say that 90% of the book was with Ryder hot and cold towards Maddie. All he did was snap at her, growl and walk away. Whatever dude. See ya later. But he treated Maddie most of the time like crap and for the most part she put up with it. Frankly those two deserved each other. I barely made it to the end. I wanted to quit so many times but I was interested in what was happening to the world. Live and learn I guess. Sorry to say but this book just didn't do it for me like I was hoping.
