This book is the author's passionate recounting of the many milestones that impacted her life, including the death of loved ones and love relationships. The writing is stream of consciousness and can be difficult to follow at times, with many of the same thoughts repeated again and again throughout the book. What we most identified with is the author's struggle to find out who she really is, how to love another yet continue to love yourself without losing yourself to another person, and how universal the emotion of grief is.Tags : Everything and a Happy Ending [Tia Shurina] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I’m not usually the biggest fan of non-fiction books and I tend to read only about 1 or 2 a year. So when I was asked to read this memoir of sorts about a woman who had kids and a husband and a father who used to gamble, I was very hesitant. I could relate to absolutely nothing it seemed. However I thought I would give it a try anyway and I was pleasantly surprised.
Firstly, I have to commend Tia for her blatent honesty. There were a lot of views in this book that I found a bit unique. The most glaring one being that with financial security, it doesn’t matter what problems you face because your life is great. I didn’t always agree with what she said but I found it refreshing that in a society where we are always so scared of saying the wrong thing or offending people, Tia is able to calmly state her piece and then logically defend it.
I also just enjoyed her story in general. Tia has been through a lot in her life and while I can’t relate to a lot of what she has been through, I can understand the feelings of being a failure, of being outcasted, of worry, of joy and everything in between. For some bizarre reason, I was able to still see myself between the pages of her novel and I found that to be the best part of reading it. The story was perfect.
That is not to say that this novel is without faults. Unfortunatly, while the story was excellent, I felt that it was very jumpy and at times I would get quite confused. The story jumped from one point to another and one time frame to another in the span of a paragraph at times and it was quite uncomfortable.
The story was also very repetitive and preachy at times. I understood the need to defend some claims but I found that she went on and on and on at times and I was like stop already. I get it.
That said though, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and I thought that it was a very meaningful and special read. I’m very glad that I chose to read this novel as I know I would not have picked it for myself under any other circumstances.
I loved it, if you a looking for heartfelt and painfully honest advice here it is. Tia is talking with you not at you, she shares her experiences in a way that is never "preachy". You need to READ this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed being taken by Tia on her journey. Her openness, honesty, humility and vulnerability made this book very special.Blissfully Dead Life Lessons From The Other Side
In order for a memoir to be interesting, the protagonist has to grow and change. Shurina has done this and her telling of the journey is heartfelt and inspiring. There is bravery in mining personal growth the way it's done in this book. The story is detailed, well constructed and engaging. It's pace is pleasant, not rushed. The characters are treated with respect. At the end I felt both entertained and inspired. I recommend this to anyone looking for a great summer read.
It's taken me a while to read and get through this lovely memoir, because throughout my time with this book, I have had to pause and ask myself if I'm living up to my own truths. Without trying or being preachy, this memoir became something of a workbook for my own life, in the past year.
It's a wonderful read, it feels like she's taking you into her confidence, and warmly telling her story, but in a way that we all can learn from it. Her truth shines, from the art on the cover, to the words inside. It's refreshing to see such boldness.
Personal growth develops from within, being able to reflect and make the change, often poses as the hardest thing of self-identification. What Shurina details in her memoir, Everything, and a Happy Ending, showed both personal prosperity and warmed with such tenderness. Heartfelt bits of inspiration, entertaining anecdotes, and truly a sense of story. Well written and delightfully structured. The pace to which Shurina took us on her story was an enjoyable one. A high recommendation for this non-fiction memoir, by a delightful author, in Tina Shurina.
This story is not the usual progression of life's problems along the way to falling in love and ending up happy. The author has more than the usual portion of challenges of many kinds, and, though trying earnestly throughout the book to do what she believes to be right, finds that troubles will find her whatever she does. Her faith in God as she perceives God to be, and several very positive influences in her life are the things that lead her to her happy ending, even though it's by a most circuitous route. The thing that is most startling and also most affecting is her determination to be the best person she can be. When in a difficult marriage she gives her husband the gift of letting him be who he is, she tries always to help and always to love. The world could use a little more of that, in my opinion. There are several elements which could be problematic, for instance a very unique and unconventional voice and often quoted slogans which guide her on her way. However, rather than causing the book to become hackneyed or saccharine, it adds to the individuality of the narrative. The protagonist is naive in ways, yet in others wiser than she appears. I found the book interesting, and at some parts inspiring.
This book is the author's passionate recounting of the many milestones that impacted her life, including the death of loved ones and love relationships. The writing is stream of consciousness and can be difficult to follow at times, with many of the same thoughts repeated again and again throughout the book.
